    If a player would gain control of a permanent that he or she does not own that player loses 1 life instead.

    So you can freely use cards like Loxodon Peacekeeper, Shuriken, Rogue Skycaptain or Starke of Rath. And Custody Battle becomes a huge annoyance...
    Why blue? Please do not try to fit blue in every card…
    Why black? Adding life loss doesn’t make any spell black…

    419.1a Effects that use the word "instead" are replacement effects.
