Default Welcome to the Guild Wars...

Once RTR is released I wanted to suggest something to my locals card shop. I would like to have a standard tournament where we have waring guilds. Explanation of my idea is the following:

Each guild will contain a minimum 3 members. You can only build a standard deck using the colors of you guild and you will not be allowed to use another guilds mechanic. Once the event is over the person who won the tournament won the event for himself as well as his guild members. Extra prizes would be awarded to members of the guild and themselves. I was thinking the fee to would be 10 dollars to cover prizes handed out by the store. I didn't put this idea in the FNM or tournament section cuz RTR isn't released yet.

This where I would need you help and guidance. How would I go about building the guilds. People would need to build a standard constructed deck with the guild colors. I was thinking people could preregister then upon registering randomly select their guild then they could build their deck prior to the event. Would it be a bad idea to only have 15 places available or should I have more participants? Let me know how I can go about doing this event? Thx you.

Does the 10 dollars include the cards to purchase the cards needed for the decks? Or are they expected to already have cards from RtR and build a deck with those? And I like the idea of randomly choosing the guilds, unless some people really want to change then they could shuffle around a bit. Random keeps it interesting though, and they mind change their minds about their favorite guild.

EDIT: I reread your post and saw that you said standard decks. That would be fine. I think you should have more than 3 people per guild only if needed; but don't let too many people be in one, therefore letting the prizes thin out amongst all the members. That could always be a reason to pick a guild with lesser members though: more prizes split among the few winners! But then the tournament would be jar to set up.

What me and my friends have planned is that we will each be purchasing an intro pack for RtR. Everyone picks a guild, and thankfully everyone picked different ones (so far). Then, we open the 2 boosters inside and trade back and forth (if you want to trade) for the correct cards of your guild. You cannot use another card with another guild's name, watermark, or mechanic, similar to how you have yours set up. It will surely be an interesting time.

Aren't there 10 guilds? So 3 per guild would be 30 people.

You could just have a sign-up sheet floating around the tournament location for a couple weeks prior to the tournament. The first people to sign up have a choice of which guild they'd like to represent. As the guild slots fill up, people that want to compete in the tournament will have to choose one of the guilds with spots still open.

I think the most fun thing would be to allow only cards from Ravnica block and Return to Ravnica rather than make it standard. You could also consider a different tournament format other than straight 1-on-1 swiss, like 5-player star or two-headed giant. Have fun!

Reason it was 5 it would only be the guilds which are in the RTR so if a guild isnt in the set we wouldn't use it. I like your first come first serve idea for the guilds.

A while back I suggested doing something similar on a magic-workstation based site. You had to play two colors and could not use another guild mechanic.
I had a few people interested but we never got around to playing.
