Thread: Plague Myr

    Default Plague Myr

    2, Plague Myr
    Artifact Creature – Myr (C)
    Infect

Ehh, kinda' a filler card, but good synergy with Glissa. Makes Infect Aggro a smidge more viable.

I was just about to make new threads for the newly spoiled cards. It's a good thing i refreshed first.

And well, it's not bad in limited I guess, but we'll see. I don't see myself playing this card all that much, but I hate infect anyway.

Just another expensive infect creature that will not see standard play. Might... MIGHT see play in limited. Unless they print some rather large infect creatures, I don't see the archetype ever really needing mana myr. Of course I could be very wrong so whatever.

i dont know about constructed, but i think in limited this could be useful. 2 mana 1/1 infects arent that bad, plus it can help ramp into bigger better infecters. not a great card, but handy

I dunno, this guy seems amazing in limited. I like a couple of infecters in a draft deck, just to deal with that odd indestructible or regenerating guy, and this guy gets you ramp when he's not required elsewhere.
I do kind of wish they hadn't made him, though, because a lot of players (and not just the new players) are getting pretty confused as to what is Mirran aligned and what is Phyrexian aligned, and this just muddies the issue even more.

It is a little weird that the Phyrexians have a Myr now, but... how is it all that hard to figure out what a card's Mirran/Phyrexian alignment is? There's a watermark on each of the cards...

As for the Plague Myr, I more or less agree with the majority. No constructed use, but some Limited use with the exact amount of Limited use varying based on the other Infect creatures in Besieged.

@OL: Yes, but that assumes you have the cards sitting in front of you; especially with the Faction Packs for the prerelease, it's annoying and time consuming to look for a silly watermark. A minor, even pedantic point I'll admit, but dangit, that's time I could be playing!

I just realized, this little guy goes quite well with Hand of the Praetors. The big problem with Hand was always that you didn't want to play ramp spells to play him early because they didn't fit his theme, but you wanted to play ramp spells to get him out as early as possible. This little guy takes care of that problem in one fell swoop; not that I'm saying that'll instantly make Hand or Infect Midrange instantly viable, but maybe with a little more support...

Ichorclaw>Necropede>this. Just my opinion. Because you want to be attacking every turn and this guy discourages such.

the thing is though that he can attack every turn like the others. if you have a bunch of infecters and hopefully some pump nothing is stopping you froma ttacking with him, but if not, or if you have something in your hand that would be better to have out that to atack with this, then its good. its speed either way. this lets you play Putrefax or hand a turn earlier without wasting space on non-infecters. its a useful tool to have in limited infect decks.

Here's the thing. I love middle sets. Why? Because, without exception, they up the power level of already-existing mechanics, such as Infect. Since Ravnica (the set in production right after they broke the meta in half with the original Mirrodin), you can see the following pattern:
    1. Wizards makes a base, big set full of interesting ideas.
    2. People complain that the set isn't very powerful because none of the mechanics have enough back-up. They continue to play with the already-established archetypes.
    3. Wizards watched carefully to see if anybody breaks any of the new mechanics. Nobody does.
    4. Once they're sure that nothing they made got broken, Wizards puts all of the good stuff in the middle set.
    5. People, already having determined that such-and-such mechanic is horrible, ignore all of the new goodies they get for these already-existing mechanics. They continue to play with already-established archetypes.
    6. Some pro goes "Oh, wait, this is borked", builds a deck and stomps tournaments with it.
    7. People complain because the new decks that dominate tournaments all use the new hawtness and they didn't pick up their Cryptic Commands until it was too late.
    8. The third set solidifies that the new archetype will remain dominant.

...and you see this over and over again; Faeries, Jund, Cruel Control, Dragonstorm, Project X, Glare, Doran, Kithkin, all of these only became popular (or dominating) once the second set, the set that gave the right tools, entered the mix. It is the second set where Wizards tries to bring down existing archetypes and give the newest mechanics their moment in the sun... so doesn't it say at least something for the power level of this poor little Myr that they waited until the middle set to release an Infecting mana dork?
Although don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that this is the most amazing thing ever and it probably won't se play outside of limited, but a lot of people were naysaying worse than this when they first came out (including myself). :/
