Gladiator Beast - One of the Top Tier
Posted 07-13-2009 at 01:51 PM by Samuraialz
Hi!
So today in Yu-Gi-Oh we are in a new format. New decks came in to replace old ones and new changes are being made. So today, I am going to talk about one of the top tier in this format, and one of the decks that interest me most: Gladiator Beasts.
Gladiator Beasts first came out of Gladiator's Assault and some people made casual, fun decks with them to play with but they didn't make the top. But when Light of Destruction was released, Gladiator Beasts got the support they needed, Gladiator Beast Gyzarus. This card gave Gladiator Beasts their consistency and destruction power and put Gladiator Beasts at the top. Another card put Gladiator Beasts on the top, Elemental Hero Prisma. This card allowed a combo with Test Tiger, allowing Gyzaus to keep coming out over and over again. But then when The Duelist Genesis came out, Gladiator Beast got Gladiator Beast's War Chariot but the set also created a deck faster than Gladiator Beasts: Tele-DAD. This was when Gladiator Beasts fell from the top. The next ban list helped Gladiator Beast a lot, though. Although Bestiari was limited to one, Tele-DAD lost it's speed and consistency, allowing Gladiator Beasts to be better. And after the release of Crimson Crisis, Gladiator Beasts got a new card: Gladiator Beast Samnite. Thus it created a new type of Gladiator Beast deck and that is Rescue Cat Gladiator Beast. Rescue Cat and Samnite gave Gladiator Beasts the consistncy they needed to rise to the top. And this is where we are today.
Alright, since we are done with my history lesson, I'll show you a build of Gladiator Beasts and then I'll discuss how each of these cards contributes into making this great deck.
Monsters (20):
3x X-Saber Airbellum
2x Rescue Cat
3x Gladiator Beast Samnite
2x Gladiator Beast Laquari
1x Gladiator Beast Bestiari
1x Gladiator Beast Murmillo
3x Test Tiger
1x Gladiator Beast Hiplomus
1x Gladiator Beast Equeste
2x Gladiator Beast Darius
1x Sangan
Spells (10):
1x Gladiator Proving Ground
1x Smashing Ground
1x Mystical Space Typhoon
1x Heavy Storm
1x Monster Reborn
3x Book of Moon
1x Mind Control
1x Enemy Controller
Traps (10):
3x Solemn Judgment
3x Gladiator Beast War Chariot
1x Mirror Force
3x Waboku
Side Deck (15):
3x Prohibition
1x Lightning Vortex
3x Trap Eater
1x Gladiator Beast Retiari
3x Light-Imprisoning Mirror
3x Black Horn of Heaven
1x Divine Wrath
Extra Deck (15):
1x Stardust Dragon
1x Red Dragon Archfiend
1x Thought Ruler Archfiend
2x Colossal Fighter
2x Dark Strike Fighter
1x Goyo Guardian
1x Iron Chain Dragon
1x Magical Android
3x Gladiator Beast Gyzarus
2x Gladiator Beast Heraklinos
Okay, first for the monsters.
3 X-Saber Airbellum
This monster provides the synchro tool for Gladiator Beasts. It sometimes can provide a little discard and is can be special summoned by Rescue Cat.
2 Rescue Cat
One of the main cards for the deck. This little kitty can special summon 2 level 3 Beast-Type monsters which means you can get out 2 X-Saber Airbellums or 2 Gladiator Beast Samnites or one of each. They will be destroyed at the end phase, but Samnite will probably be already spun out for another Gladiator Beast and Airbellum will probably be already used for a Synchro Summon. An awesome little cat.
3 Gladiator Beast Samnite
One of the main cards for the deck. Can be special summoned by Rescue Cat and then can be returned to the deck for another Gladiator Beast except Samnite. It can also search for a Gladiator Beast card from your deck if it was special summoned from your deck by the effect of a Gladiator Beast.
2 Gladiator Beast Laquari
The beatstick and main attacker for the Gladiator Beasts. Laquari is originally an 1800 attacker but becomes 2100 ATK when the card special summoned by the effect of a Gladiator Beast. Laquari can also be returned to the deck for another Gladiator Beast, except for Laquari of course.
1 Gladiator Beast Bestiari
The key to bringing out Gladiator Beast Gyzarus and a spell/trap destroyer. Also can be spun back for another Gladiator Beast, except for Bestiari.
1 Gladiator Beast Murmillo
The monster destroyer for the Gladiator Beasts and can be returned to the deck for another Gladiator Beast, except for Murmillo.
3 Test Tiger
This card can get easy spins for Gladiator Beasts and can get the Gladiator Beasts you need at the right time.
1 Gladiator Beast Hiplomus
The defender for the Gladiator Beasts and originally has 2100 DEF but can be pumped up to 2400 DEF if special summoned by the effect of another Gladiator Beast. It also can be returned to the deck for another Gladiator Beast, except for Hiplomus.
1 Gladiator Beast Equeste
When this card is special summoned from the deck by the effect of a Gladiator Beast, you can return 1 Gladiator Beast card from your Graveyard to your hand. That means you can get back your War Chariots, Bestiari, etc. Yopu can also spin it back to the deck for another Gladiator Beast, except for Equeste.
2 Gladiator Beast Darius
This Gladiator Beast can bring back another from the Graveyard which can lead to easy Gyzarus or Heraklinos. It also can be returned to the deck for another Gladiator Beast, except for Darius.
1 Sangan
This adorable little furball can search for any monster from your deck with 1500 or less ATK which means you can get your Rescue Cats and Bestiari easy. Even though some people think he's slow, I think he deserves a spot in the deck.
Now for the spells.
1 Gladiator Proving Ground
An easy search for a level 4 or lower Gladiator Beast. Some people run 2 or even 3 but I think you'll just end up with a hand full of monsters, so one's enough.
1 Smashing Ground
Basically a staple. Allows nice monster destruction.
1 Mystical Space Typhoon & 1 Heavy Storm
Spell/trap removal to make your big plays or to get rid of Anti-Meta cards that hurt your deck.
1 Monster Reborn
A staple. It brings back a monster from your graveyard.
3 Book of Moon
Very popular in this format. It can stop a Synchro Summon or a big play. Very good card in a lot of decks.
1 Mind Control
This card allows to steal a tuner for a synchro summon or if you are playing a mirror match to steal one of your opponent's Gladiator Beasts to bring out your Gyzarus or Herkalinos.
1 Enemy Controller
Can be used to either steal a monster or to swich a battle position.
Now for the traps.
3 Solemn Judgment
Some people say Solemn Judgment is a bad call in this format. I agree for some decks, such as Lightsworn but i disagree for Gladiator Beasts. It protects your big plays and protects your spell and traps. Half your life points may be big cost, but it's worth it if it's really important.
3 Gladiator Beast War Chariot
A Divine Wrath for Gladiator Beasts. It stops major effects, such as Judgment Dragon's and Dark Armed Dragon's effect.
1 Mirror Force
Great card to stop an opponent's swarm and turn the tide in your favor.
3 Waboku
This card prevents your monsters from being destroyed and you take no damage. That means free Gladiator Beast tag outs. I thing this card deseves to be at three.
The side deck.
3 Prohibition
Stops your opponent from playing a certain card. Great card to stop a key card.
1 Lightning Vortex
Clears your opponent's field. Can be a game changer.
3 Trap Eater
Stops those annoying Anti-Meta cards and a Tuner.
1 Gladiator Beast Retiari
Can remone a card from your opponen's graveyard and can be spun for another Gladiator Beast, except Retiari.
3 Light-Imprisoning Mirror
A card to use against Lightsworn. Stops their effects.
3 Black Horn of Heaven
Stops your opponent's Synchros, Judgment Dragon and Dark Armed Dragon, or any other Special Summon.
1 Divine Wrath
Negates the effect of an effect monster and destroying it by discarding 1 card. Does the same job as Gladiator Beast War Chariot.
15 Synchros
Normal synchros that you usually see.
Gosh that was a long blog. If you have any comments you can post them below. Well see ya!

@ leonix
Gyzarus can only be Fusion Summoned with a monster that has the name "Gladiator Beast Bestiari". That is why Prisma works and Mystical Sheep #1 doesn't.Posted 07-14-2009 at 05:08 PM by anon -

funny everyone thought these guys were dead but they made it to the finals in Nationals. so they are very much alivePosted 07-17-2009 at 05:11 PM by HKUxLeadX909

@Unregistered: Sometimes they can. I understand murmillo and darius in opening hand does suck. But the only problem with parry and disarm is it's -1 for the cost and solemn and bribes do the job much better. Test Tiger can always fix the murmillo and secutor problem (secutor problem's worse).
@HKUxLeadX909: Yep. It's a great format for Glads.
@leonix: Mystical Sheep #1 doesn't work. Nice idea, though.
Forgot to thank everyone so far who has posted for the changes and good comments.
