Why is gyarados a flying type?
I understand that he is water, and later on he learns Dragon moves...But WHy WHY... why...? A flying???
Why not Water / Dragon ....Huhmmm..
Your thoughts and comments are all welcomed graciously.

They wanted to make lance's first pokemon in Blue/Red/Yellow to be super easy to kill (x4 weakness to electricity) to give you a false sense of security thinking that you'll be able to beat his dragons just as easily?

Good theory, it is very possible they wanted to trick us. But I expected them to change that in the G/S/C/R/S/E/FR/LG...lol.
I hope they consider that for future.:)

True maybe they thought they could trick us with the same trick twice (and thrice for that matter), but yeah maybe they took it out from mythology somewhere? Is there any kind of flying seaserpent in chinese/japanese mythology?

i with you on that one! gyrados cant learn Fly, isnt effected by any ground moves and yet, they make him a Water/Flying type! and that confuses me.
he should be a water/dragon type if u ask me!
Gyarados is based on a creature from Japanese mythology. Also if you look at the sprite it has very small scales on its side that are equivalent to wings, if you think about it logically its supposed to be like a sea serpent that would not be stopped from rampaging if it came to land, therefore it could in theory fly over land by swimming fast enough to take off.
Also from a game mechanics point of view it has to have a weakness, its attack and speed stats are very high and it has acess to Dragon Dance which can in theory make it invincible... Essentially most of the superpower pokémon in the game (Salamence, Dragonite, Tyranitar, Gyarados) have 4x weaknesses that make them beatable... its the same reason why Metagross despite beldum and metang floating is hit by Ground attacks, its a way of evening out the game.
If they made it water/dragon type it would not be as easily beaten. The idea is that no single pokémon is the most powerful.
In theory the only pokémon without weakness is Sableye, however its defences and shedinja's inability to transfer wonder guard prevent it becoming broken.
