Here's a question that i have to have answered.

If someone attacks a spear createn and it is sent to the graveyard would you still be able to use it's effect and bring Spear Cretean back to the field face-down?

I've looked into this and although it hits a 9.5 in cheatery, nowhere dose it say that you cannot, contrary to what the last poster said.

No, that would not be allowed. Use Night Assailants rulings as the reaoning as to why you can't.

You cannot select the "Night Assailant" that was itself sent to the Graveyard, so there is no infinite loop.

Cards who's effects target cards in the Graveyard when they are sent to the Graveyard cannot target themselves.

If a Spear Cretin is sent to the graveyard and its effect activates, can you
choose to special summon the same Spear Cretin?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

You cannot.

However, it is possible to Special Summon a different copy of "Spear Cretin"
from the Graveyard.

And that's how it is.

Elaborate. Why can you not use Spear Cretin's effect on himself?

And that's how it is.
Not buying that.

Cards who's effects target cards in the Graveyard when they are sent to the Graveyard cannot target themselves.

Yes, you can. See Agido:

"Agido" can Special Summon itself.
From the Yugioh specific card Q and A.

Not buying that.

That's just how it's ruled, he cannot bring himself back.

Of course, if you had ANOTHER spear cretin in the grave, you could create a loop of impenetrability from attacks.

Because Curtis Schultz said so.
Look it up here:

That's where I, and every Judge there is, gets their rulings.
Don't argue, alright, some of know what we're talking about.

Yes, you can. See Agido:

From the Yugioh specific card Q and A.
Read Agido's second ruling:
"Agido"'s effect does not target.
As I stated, Cards who's effects target cards in the Graveyard when they are sent to the Graveyard cannot target themselves. Aigido is a non-tageting effect.

Your not buying an answer from the Judges Board? How much higher do you need to go then with the people who hand out the english rulings? Let me put it this way, if Curtis, Kevin or Steve say it is so, then it is so.

If a judge says its so, than yes I would be obliged to follow; but I would also like to know why he makes such a ruleing.

As I stated, Cards who's effects target cards in the Graveyard when they are sent to the Graveyard cannot target themselves.

Ok, I get that now but is that an actual rule on the books? If so, than SC could not use his effect on himself. In addition, I may be mistaken on this, I though that only cards on the field are targeted; cards in the graveyard are selected (something like that).

Cards can be targeted anywhere. In the hand, Deck, on the field, in the Graveyard, even the removed from play area. There is no restriction as to where an effect can target.

The Judges List (the link Rurikarakusa provided) is where all Judges go to get the final word on questions that are not covered in the official FAQ. Though the Judges List is not considered as official as the FAQ it is still where all Judges have been instructed to ask questions they have and this list is used for making decisions in official tournament situations. The three names I mentioned are not only Judges but they are the final word as far as English rulings go.
