View Full Version : EV training in Emerald

Heres my idea, i'm pretty sure it won't work as well as Id hoped... but here goes...

In emerald, certain berries such as Kelpsy remove EVs from your Pokémon, and with it the stat Boosts.. With this in mind, theoretically its possible to get the stats you desire "easily" without worrying about EV training at all..

All you would need to do essentially, is raise your Pokémon with the natures that boost the stats you like, however you want, and against anything you like.. During this time, you grow multiple berries that you require for removing EVs from stats you don't want to promote.. Remove all the EVs from these stats, then fill up your Pokémon with the correct vitamins, for the stats you do want... e.g. EVed Tauros, Speed and Attack, remove all EVs from defence, sp atk, sp def, then fill up tauros with Carbos and Protein, then voila...

The only real problem with this idea is the amount of money it costs in game, and the amount of time it takes, however, anyone that does EV train, will know the amount of time it takes anyway, and yes I realise, that all you essentially need to do is get a lv5 pokémon and fill it with the vitamins you need, however this method is mostly useful for things you may have previously trained and want to change the Stats of, or pokémon that you used before the E4 which are harder to EV train in the first place as you move around the map too much..

Getting Vitamins isn't that hard in Emerald. Once you reach the Battle Frontier you can buy any of them for 1 BP a piece. Many Frontier facilities will only start you off winning 1 BP but it's a nice alternative to battling for cash.

I'm not exactly sure, but aren't you not allowed to feed a pokemon any more EV-ups once its EV's erach a certtain level? Or is tht pertaining only to the particular stat effected?

Anyway, this doesn't seem like too much of a shortcut. I never found EV training to be too much of a hassle anyway. If you have both r/s/e and fr/lg, I don't thiink you should have any "hard" EV's to train.

Yea EV Training isnt Hard, it just takes a while to do, i suppose this will shorten it up a bit, but to be honest the berries that are more useful are the ones that lower EVs, cause it allows you to retrain something that was poorly EV trained to be properly EV trained... (Like your starter for example that you just leveled up quickly so you could get through a lot of the game) Ultimately in a case like that you probably would just be better off breeding for another one and training that, but still the point can be made...

Plus I think the Berries and Candies only boost/lower the stat by 10 per candy/berry, so if you want something with say 196 EVs in HP (for whatever reason) you would still have to do 6 EVs worth of HP even after you boosted it by 190 by some method like beating up a few whismurs... Also I know the candies wont allow you to use them if your Effort Points have gone beyond 100 or something like that I dont know if the berries are the same, I havent used them yet to be honest.

I for one am more interested in their supposed happiness boosting effect. Did they just write that in so it doesn't sound complete horrible (lowers base attack [etc], whoopee) or does it actually contribute significantly to happiness? Because I really hate happiness evolutions, I'm just too lazy to get them done. Are these berries like free, growable minivitamins in terms of happiness?

In terms of happiness, yes they are, essentially, the Berries are the reverse of the vitamins in the sense they lower stats and EVs, both of which raise happiness because you are essentially paying attention to the EV distribution to your pokémon...
I hope personally that you can use Berries after you have got more than 100 EVs in something, otherwise my plan is messed up, still it would allow for badly trained Pokémon to be "fixed" with the correct stat changes

Yeah, I tried them for their happiness value. With a soothe bell, it only takes like 30 of them to max out happiness.
