View Full Version : Desire--Give me suggestions

I play type two mostly, but lately I have came across some good cards. Slowly I have picked up some good extended cards and made a few solid decks. (Raffinity, Landstill, Mind's Desire). I started playing in weatherlight, sold my cards and quit around Mercadian masks. I just recently got back into magic when Legions came out. So far Mind's Desire has just been basically the most fun I've ever had with a deck, but here locally the only tournaments that are ran are basically type 1 or 2, strictly. I don't have a problem keeping up with type two but I do not have the time or the money to POWER* a type one deck. (full time working and college). However, the local tournament players have no power in their decks so I would like some help on card suggestions for a type one desire. I did not post this in 1.5 due to the fact that Desire, demonic tutor, vampiric tutor is all banned. Please give whatever references, or ideas for the deck that you can. Thanks-
Card choices
Vampiric, Demonic, mystic tutor, merchant scroll--Searching for desire or the kill. . .
Nightscape familiar--I'm playing it U/B because I don't think it could even be considered without tutors.
Tendrils of agony/Brainfreeze--The Kill
Brainstorm, Accumulate Knowledge, or gush?--The draw (need help)
Also. . .
should i play moxen? (all i have is Chrome and Diamond)
Sapphire Medallion?
how many fetch lands? Just Polluted Delta or should I also throw in Flooded Strand?
Any criticism, comments and help would be greatly appreciated. I know there are probably better things I could play but I like* this idea and mechanic, I would just prefer it be made halfway viable for winning.

I'm sorry to disappoint you. But a Mind's Desire will not be able to beat the competetion, if you don't have any power. It will be too defficult to get a high storm count in time to win w/o free mana and free storm counters. Remember even unpowered aggro decks that run a lot of disruption are able to gold fish at turn if not faster. Even if you had P9 Mind's Desire would be a subotimal deck choice.
Seeing that you play in an environment with no power i suggest sticking to Food Chain Goblins or U/G Madness. Both these decks doesnt suffer heavely from the loss of power and are able to overpower other unpowered decks.
I cannot stress this enough: Some decks simply require power to be viable.
Anyway if you want to continue with a Mind's Desire deck, i have the following suggestions.
Mana Acc
4 x Dark Ritual
4 x Cabal Ritual (It's a neccesary evil if you don't play power)
1 x Lotus Petal
1 x Mana Vault
1 x Mana Crypt
Broken/Draw
4 x Brainstorm
4 x Night's Whisper (easely played of of a Ritual)
1 x Yawgmoth's Will
1 x Cunning Wish (You need atleast one maindeck answer to Arcane Lab)
1 x Demonic Consultation
1 x Necropotence (gg if played turn 1 of a Ritual)
1 x Yawgmoth's Bargain (maybe too expensive)
Disruption
4 x Duress
4 x FoW
A last point that needs to be thought about is if you start your storm count would'nt it be more easy to just win through 9 counts and a tendrils than having to have to UU for Mind's Desire and then having to get BB for tendrils or U for B freeze?
I don't have the answers. I havent tried it out. Just some random thoughts.

I have thought about most of the points that you have stated here. However, I do want my deck to be viable, maybe I'll just keep my desire deck extended and go with goblins or something for type one. Is there a decklist anywhere around here that may be able to help?
Anyways, thanks for the time and help.

Here's the food chain goblin build that won the SCG P9 Richmond. It was piloted by Mike Zuan.
Lands
5 Mountain
1 Strip Mine
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 Wooded Foothills
4 Wasteland
4 Taiga
Creatures
4 Goblin Matron
3 Goblin Ringleader
2 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
1 Gempalm Incinerator
1 Goblin Sharpshooter
4 Goblin Piledriver
1 Skirk Prospector
1 Siege-Gang Commander
3 Goblin Warchief
4 Goblin Lackey
4 Goblin Recruiter
3 Goblin Vandal
Spells
4 Food Chain
3 Red Elemental Blast
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Emerald
1 Black Lotus
Sideboard
1 Red Elemental Blast
4 Tormod's Crypt
4 Pyroblast
3 Mogg Fanatic
3 Null Rod
The deck is a aggro/combo. You can kill your opponent by attacking them to death by a simple rush plan.
You can also combo your opponent out by playing a Food Chain (FC) and stacking your deck with a Goblin Recruiter, putting a Ringleader as first, fifth and so forth killing your opponent in one turn with hasted goblins. It goes like this:
Play ringleader draw 4 goblins where one is Ringleader and one is a Warchief (WC). Sac (to FC) the Ringleader to get 5 mana, play another Ringleader (1 mana floating). Play and sac goblins until you have enough Piledrivers and a
WC to make a lethal attack.
This particular build is tuned against against a Fish heavy metagame. If you play in a low-powered area remove the Red Elemental Blasts (REBs) and the Goblin Vandals and add, a 4th Warchief, a 4th Ringleader, a 2nd Incinerator and up the Skirk Prospector Count to 4.
Also the kiki-jiki's migth not be optimal but i havent tried them out yet.

I don't understand why you would use 2x Wooded Foothills and 2x Bloodstained mires with no black in the deck? Wouldn't it be wiser to just use 4x wooded Foothills?
