I'd have to go with Master Chief in this poll.

In my opinion, I think that Master Chief has the better costume. Those big shoulder pads on Samus just doesn't cut it for me. Same thing goes for the color. And unlike Samus, Master Chief's costumes have battle scars and chipped paint. Those details makes him look like his been places and kicked a few asses.

For accessories, its cool that she has a gun-arm, a whip and some bombs and all that but Master Chief has Rockets, Shotguns, SMG's, Battle Rifles, Grenades, Pistols (Not that great by itself), Sniper Rifles and etc. He can also use weapons from the enemy covenant side such as Plasma Pistols (one charged shot takes down any shield) Plasma Rifle, Beam Rifle, Fuel Rod Gun, Plasma Grenades (which sticks to enemies), and the lovely Covenant Sword. Different weapons to adapt to the different situations. Don't forget about his sweet rides too.

As for abilities, I think that Master Chief can beat Samus. Master Chief and a few others were taken from there parents as children to be part of the Spartan Project. They were trained and technically and biologically augmented to be fighting machines. Heres some facts about the Spartans:

Though he fights along side the Marines, the Master Chief is actually in the Navy.
Master Chief is the only surviving Spartan, bio-mechanically augmented soldiers trained from childhood.
The augmentation fuses titanium ceramic polymers to their bones. Their eyes are genetically enhanced for natural night vision.
A brain implant stimulates rapid growth. Male or female, all Spartans are 7 feet tall, weigh half a ton in armor and their muscles are modified to be extremely dense.
Out of the 75 original Spartan candidates that were originally assigned to the program, only 37 survived the augmentation process.
Five of the survivors were left invalids as a result of the augmentation.
Two of them, had bones that were twisted so badly they lived out the rest of their lives in buoyancy tanks and one developed a severe case of Parkinson's disease.
Most of the Spartans were killed when the Covenant attacked the planet reach.
Master Chief also have people to back him up just incase things go wrong. He has the entire UNSC Navy and Marines at his side to help him if needed. Where Samus' crew?

In a popularity contest, Master Chief would definately win this match. When was the last time people all over the country (and some spots in the world) stood in line to get there reserved limited edition Metriod game for Game Cube? When was the last time Metroid was had a preview/teaser in the movie theaters? When was the last time millions of people at a time all over the world logged online to play each other in different game types with a whole website devoted to keep up the ranks? When was the last time you saw a life size, dual weilding, Samus statue at the mall with a customer willing to pay $5,000 dollars for it?

Overall I think that Master Chief is the better character and can beat Samus in a fight anyday. But dont get me wrong. I think that Samus has some good qualities like sex appeal but what good is sex appeal when fighting bugs?

master chief - changes different colours
samus aran - has the varia suit giving her enhanced body armour allowing her to venture into harsh climates. gravity suit looks the same yet allows her to move freely in water. phazon suit looks the same yet allwos her to live in phazon. dark suit looks like a tin can but has a cool look to it. light suiit is sleak and innovative allowing her to travel on beams of light! fusion suits looks seak and coo also.

If you put fully teched out MC and Samus in a battle, Samus would just romp on him. Who cares what vehicles he can use? With her speed dash, they don't matter. I like master chief better as well but i do have to say that Samus was trained since birth as well as being trained by divine aliens. so to say that she is would be taken out that easy is just ignorant, besides what i said before is that she has that power suit that gives her the advantage but in the same suit he would win.

I'm a nintendo nut, through and through. I own every nintendo console, and I've played the majority of the nintendo specific titles and games (i.e.- Metroid, Super Mario Bros., etc.)
However, I would have to say that the winner would be Master Chief. Samus might have stonger shields and such, but Master Chief is a master of stealth. Someone like Samus in that monstrosity they call a battle suit couldn't handle him. Master Chief would scope out a place to sit and wait, then use sticky grenades rapidly to disable the protection of the suit, and quickly swing with the sword or snipe with a sniper rifle or missle launcher to finish her off. His camouflage works at least in part in nearly any terrain, and all the ones I've seen the Metroid and Halo series take place in, so this would in theory work.

However, regardless of any arguments to be made, you must remember that Samus can lose to Jigglypuff, who uses no weapons or shields at all, as proven by SSB & SSBM. I think this more than proves that she would lose to Master Chief.

secondly, have you looked at samus' shields lately? they get up to like 1300, while MC has that little tiny bar in the corner of his screen.

samus can take rockets, mc...not so much. if samus can take rockets, she can take plasma grenades which have even less explosive power. heck, even with the arguement that one grenade takes down one of her shield blocks. that's only 4, leaving her sitting sexy at 900.
also, if master chief can't take a grenade, he sure as heck cant take a power bomb! (which vaporizes targets, in case you didn't know)

also note that if the sword can't kill an elite on legendary, it sure as heck cant kill samus.

And also the technology and physics of it all is different, too different. If they are years apart of each other, it would be like comparing a F-22 to a P-52 Mustang.

But in my mind, I still think Master Chief would still win. He could always activate Halo and take everyone down with him.

I was referring to the fact that dark green blends into terrain a little better than orange. I did not confuse the Arbiter with MC. Also, I play more multiplayer than campaign, and sniping is an essential, and useful skill. I was simply referring to the fact that MC is trained to do these things, and would do them when facing an opponent such as Samus. We have to all stop looking at this as a "gameplay" argument and look at it as the ability according to script that it really is.

I'm not sure if you're making a point, or picking a fight, but I'll chose the prior. I'll agree with you that her speed is by far superior, along with her shields, but I'd still have to say that Master Chief would win. Talking game script/character design, not gameplay, I'd still say Master Chief would win. As Muffin Man No9 pointed out, comparing their technology, which is what you are doing, instead of their abilities, is not a fair comparison. However, Samus would never be caught in a fight without her weapons, so we can asume the fight would never be "fair." Samus might be able to take him, but in my mind Master Chief is still superior.

That actually may be the only real agreement on this argument. Also, we have to all keep in mind that Halo was not intended to be the "Metroid" of X-Box, so comparing the two really isn't a just comparison. You will always have those who believe that one is better than the other (such as myself) regardless of what arguments are made.

Wow, that's the worst argument I've heard for Samus' case yet. All we know of aliens is what movies/games/books/etc. give us. For all we know aliens are just a bunch of big flys.
