Seems best used as a combo piece with some spell that takes a lot of it's casters life - like adnauseum. Specially as you can cast this first

Channel was my first thought too, but then I thought what if that made you too susceptible to something like burn? Could they burn you in response to attempting to sacrifice?(too lazy to look up rules). Otherwise yes, large amounts of mana in your pool is never a bad thing, even if it is colorless. The other thing that immediately snaps into my thoughts is Phyrexian Processor

use it with ad nauseum or w/e that black card is that just lets you draw cards and lose life equal to its cost. seems good for an esper or b/w token deck so they can draw into token generators

In either case, the lifegain is put on the stack, which means that yes, you are highly vulnerable to incinerate and friends.
