hey
I've played Magic the Gathering from oddysey block to about time spiral ish and i'm pretty fed up with the game so I've decided to try something else and see what yu-gi-oh is like.
I know the general idea of the game from the TV show and from being taught basic rules, but i don't quite understand how the rules work in detail and also things like fusion and special summoning.
I want to get two decks and learn to play with a friend.
I have some basic questions such as.
1. What would be a good idea to buy as a starting player. I want two decks, preferably about evenly matched and that come with rule books.
2. what would be good boosters to buy to suppliment those decks?
3. how do boosters and rarity "work" what are the rarities and how often do they occur.
4. how do sets "work" are they independant entities or can you mix cards from sets.
remember I understand magic really well, so explaining things to me in the context of magic if you know about magic too might help.

ok so you get 1 rare a pack(it might be a super/ultimate rare.
get two structure decks to start you off. my favorites would be spellcaster and zombie.
each pack has a different amount of each holo, or "rare"
there are rares (not holos)
and holos (but there are many different rarities of holos)
depending on how much you are really willing to spend on yugioh, get 2 of the same deck per deck, and work from there. i actually dont have teh dark deck, but if you were to get 2 deck, then get 2 of those (to build one deck, not one for each of you)
you can mix any sets you want, but don't use cards on the ban list... look on the yugioh website.
certain sets have certain card, and each set has its advantages and disadvtanges. for the best support for a structure deck is anotherof the same structure deck, with perhaps the exception of dragon structure and kaiba starter or spellcasters judgement (structure) and yugi deck...
whats your budget?

By buying 2 of the Dark Emperor structure decks you can make a decent Removal deck. Or budget yourself and make Gadget Oppression.

lee, he needs 2 seperate decks, and i don't think there are any decks from structures that can stand up to 2 dark emperor, but i agree with you. maybe 1 kaiba evo,1 dragon structure, and 1 kaiba original. a flute of the summoning based deck w/ spear dragons, luster dragons, red eyes b., and blue eyes.....
again, it depends his budget

thanks for the advice people!
Could you link me to websites that sell the decks as I don't really know what they look like or how much they are.
As far as budget goes, I'm only going to spend the ~$30 on two decks, and then play a couple times with a friend who agreed to play if i bought the decks. Then if we like it i'll buy more cards, if not then not so much.
We're kinda biased against yu-gi-oh because in freshman year of highschool some guy that was kind of a jerk came and told us that yu-gi-oh was better than magic and brought cards, which kind of turned us off. it's only now that we've got utterly bored with magic that we wanna try something new.

No offense but Yugioh is the best. You can buy 3 decks for 30 bucks.Try the Dark Emperor tho, if you want to wait for the new zombie one,it says they are going to be very powerful.

hey thanks for the advice I think I'll do that.
Where can I order the dark emperor and zombie deck from? I guess no one near me sells yu-gi-oh cards.
also, is there a website that explains the rules? I think learning them will be useful lol.
Thanks again for your help!

this site is actually a very good site to get started. to bring stradegy into play, which is for further use, try pojo.com or metagame.com - 2 sites that would help broaden your insight on yugioh. the link to the original yugioh site is http://wwww.yugioh-card.com/ just scroll down and click on the us flag to take you to the site. from there, you could go to locator and find stores and hobby leagues near you. good luck on yugioh!!

never heard of any zombie deck coming out. I thought there already was one
and if you could answer this question it would be good: about how much does one deck cost?( in magic)
scrum

magic decks cost $10 - $12 for a "precon" deck that contains specific cards and is ready to play. normally these decks will focus on some strategy or aspect of the set they are from. some can be found for as little as $3 online though. (if they contain rares that arn't valuable and are not very good)
A "good deck" that people play at tournaments are usually rare stuffed and can cost $100+ but i don't play at tournaments, i just play with friends for fun, as it is a childrens card game.

good idea or bad idea? $30 for two decks ready to play sounds pretty good to me.

well those decks could be useful for gettin u in the game
fire and water deck r bad but come with mobius and thestalos
They have a wide variety of different effects and basic cards too
But the yugioh game diff from magic
Magic is basically pecking at life and watching the mana
yugioh is having lots of cards in hand (draw) and trying to control the game by aggresion and special summoning
Yugioh u can thankfully join and play competive for cheap (gadget) which could cost 40$ (no fossil dyna)
But decks can range from 600$ (gladiator) to 1000$ (darkarmed)
But for packs go to yugioh-card.com from the next sneak preview, buy packs, sell holos for a ridic amount of money (leik 50 a card), buy more, rinse and repeat, u can only buy packs 3 times (5 and 1 xtra) for 20-25$ (sell under the table)
And depending where u live it can help. New jersey, flordia, and cali all have big sneak previews, this is where u can make easy money
if u want to get serious in this game pm and ill help u with a deck or whatever
Buy newest packs since thats where the money lies

actually i was wondering about that.
Why are certain cards ridiculously expensive online. like in the $20 + range. I don't understand why these cards have such inflated values and who buys them.

in yugioh most the cards in a set are terrible expect for a few good cards and a few with potential.
With secret rares containing the best card(s) in a set and only MAYBE gettin a secret every 1:24 packs (not guarenteed in a box) and having 10 secrets per set, to get 3 of a certain secret u need approx 30 boxes, and boxes being approx 80-96 off a shelf, it can cost u over 2400$ for 3 of 1 secret. And with the demand of that certain cards and the multiple copies of other cards, people need to make their money back so they sell that certain card very high and the other cards prices dwindle in time.
So at sneak preview sell the cards quick (next set is terrible but the cards featured will be in new yugioh show so they will rake in cash)
And EVERY1 buys the 200 dollar cards x3. Its gotten ridic but u got to do what u got to do.
o yah. and the structures u can probably find for cheaper leik 20$ for both. search around online

^that one looks cheap^
but yah, ude makes only a few good cards, rest garbage for profit, magic more user friendly on wallet

wow thats crazy, so rarity is almost like a form of cost on a card since some cards are insanely rare.

Welcome to Yu-Gi-Oh!
Super fun.
Super simple to learn
Super hard to get bored with.
Super nerdy (then again, what card game isn't?)
Super expensive if you decide to compete at all what-so-ever.
enjoy the fledgling year or so before the call of the competetive scene finally draws you in, I wish I could relive those days:)...:(
Anyway, while the Dark Emperor deck is probably the best starter deck available, it's has some pretty advanced rulings, which my fellow TCGPlayers failed to mention could confuse a new player, so I'd get an older starter deck for you and your friend, welcome to yugimonz, and I don't care if you don't end up playing it, you are now a yugimonz nerd simply for showing interest, also, you need help with a Zombie, Machine, or Monarch deck I'm your man, if you buy packs and want to know what you can make out of what you have, PM me or start a thread, I'll be there to help out.
Can you dig it?

Super hard to get bored with.
actually It's quite possible.
1. If your favorite cards are banned.
2. If your deck is killed by the ban list.
Not sure if you know but they're is a banned list which makes it so that powerful cards get banned or limited(only 1 copy per deck)

are cards like pot of greed and polmerization only in some old set or do they re-relese these as it seems like at least polymerization is necessary for a lot of fusion summons.

Umm, don't teach a new player a concept that idiotic.
Your deck gets Limited/Banned, you adapt and keep playing, if not be a self made victim to fate and karma and quit.
Him learning the basics comes before the banlist discussion, you guys are giving him more than he can chew at once, piece by piece guys, kinda like the way you learned it?
