Yu-Gi-Oh! is played at many levels and in many places. Most people start out playing the game at a casual level though, and eventually transition into playing in tournaments, first local-level events, and eventually the big events.

So, let's talk about those beginning players. What one piece of advice would you give them as they prepare to become tournament players?

Ok this is the best thing that new players can do to get into the game.

First get some one who knows the game like a level 1 judge and ask as many questions as you possibly can.

This is important because if that person cant answer all of your question, then it is up to you to find out more about the game!

The best place to get help would be the official web page on the upperdeck site, located here www.yugioh-card.com

Also there are many resources that can help you to learn the rules and the cards them selves.

One resource would be like this web site, you can ask many questions here in our Q&A section.

Also you can download a program called (Ronin) it has every card ruling that has been published, also the site is very good with the specific rulings for beginers!! www.netrep.net

That is all i can think of for now.

For the new beginners this is what i follow as a good duelist!!

Know the rules
Know the game
Know your cards, also know as many cards as you can!

and finally know your opponent!

Follow these simple rules and you can become a great duelist just like the advanced players!!

Thats all for now!!

First advice is to look at alot of decks and look at prices of cards. Also, listen to Advanced players when they tell you a card isn't very good, cuz it can save you alot of money. Buy the new structure decks first, then ask Judges and stuff what are some good cards that are relatively cheap(well not necessarily cheap but cheaper than say DMoC) and can easily boost power.

Some cards beginners should pick up that dont come in a structure deck.

Sinister Serpent
D.D. Warrior Lady
Tribe-Infecting Virus
Jinzo(easier to get than you think)
Blade Knight
Berserk Gorilla's
1500 special summoners( i.e. Mystic Tomato and Giant Rat)

With these and a structure deck(prolly just get both and mix the magic/traps around a bit) and some of these cards listed, a good tourney worthy deck can emerge. Anybody got any other advice that can be added to my own as far as what cards to get?

Sorry, the Tomato and stuff are in structure decks, just the older ones.

BTW, i still to this day do not own a jinzo, and i have won many a tournament without it. I pefer End of Anubis and V Lord even Kaiser Glider over Jinzo.

I agree with what everyone said, but I am not too sure about what ensabehnur said about Jinzo. Also, you should have fun and know the value of your cards.

Pay attention to what cards are coming out and think through your deck to build a solid theme, also look for cards that would help out in a variety of situations and that can take out common combos.
It's really down to the deck not the duelist in the end.

Some things beginners need to know:

Never have over 60 cards in a deck, you won't get what you want when you want it.
Have as many copies of a card that you are using in your deck as you can.
Don't make a Chaos deck. (Cheap losers)
and Finally, PRacitce, Practice, Practice.

yeah you really shouldn't play by the way they do on tv it's so, so different. you don't really have to read the entire rule book just find an advanced player and ask him or like unimatrix said a Lv1 Judge.

Hey there. Im new to the site. I understand what all of yall are sayiing. ive been through tons of decks (starter, dragon, pecker[im making another], and a couple others) but the one that has helped me the most is my beast beatdown. i cant travel much so right now only place to duel round here is the local Books A Million.

my best words of advice are as follows its not so much the deck you run its how you run it, if you are demoralized at the start of the duel(Ie you are facing someone that intimidates) you don't give up and keep positive. Often times when you lose to those ppl the loss could have been prevented if you played your cards right, what I meen is if you are demorilised you often make mistakes you don't normally do. So the thing to keep in mind here is on anygiven day even a champion can be beaten so never give up. Oh and do be too quick to call cards "staples" just because everyone else uses a card does'nt meen it has a place in your deck, also say you opponent plays a jinzo he's indirectly doing you a favor he's negating his own traps as well use it to your advantage creature swap anyone??? snatch steel??? Make him pay for using the card so think about other options than just destroying stuff. So just keep an open mind is all I ask if you do you'll be well on your way to become a better player.

I would add that you should make your deck the best you can then ask experienced duelist these three questions.

1 Would you look at my deck?
2 What would you change about it?
3 Why would you change that?

Everybody that has played for awhile and is advanced will give you there opinion on your deck. Let them look at it. Just because they says it is good or bad don't take what they say literally. Ask them those three questions. Listen to what they say. Ask other experienced players the same questions and a pattern will reveal itself.

If they are experienced they would problably ask you what you are trying to do with the deck. Is it, stall, aggro, chaos, beatstick, water, pyro, gravity bind? This will let them know what you are trying to build. The suggestions will be taylored towards that instead of the normal bias that they may have towards certain cards or deck types.

The things that the most people would change, change first. Then let them look at your deck again after you have changed it and ask the same three questions. You will be surprised on how fast they will look at it and say nice deck. That means you have tuned your deck and it should run well.

Good Luck,

I would have to say that the kids need to watch others duel to get the idea of tournament dueling. Even though it's the same dueling, just going out there and starting can be a little streneous.

Four simple things:

Play by the rules! It's no fun if you don't!
Avoid using the same old decks, experiment, it adds new twists to your duels!
Don't let the ****ards grind you down! If you get people who've been here longer just putting you down and putting you off the game, don't take it! Report them, or even better, ignore them! That really winds them up!
And Four: Avoid Chaos! Chaos Sucks! Get a REAL theme!

Peace!

Odsox - Why does Chaos suck? Is it because they keep beating you? Or is it because your one of the people who value orginality over success?

I always want to know why people think this by saying "Chaos sucks". It can be beat, you just have to CREATE and PLAY a well built deck. Alot of people hate Chaos because it wins. People copy what wins. It's the nature of gaming. When Gravekeepers and Zombies start placing in tournaments you will see alot of people go to this deck type. They are relying on somebody else to make there deck for them. That doesn't mean they know how to play it.

So before you state "Chaos sucks" why don't you change it to "coping somebodys deck sucks" because that what your b*tching about.

the obvious
is to know the rules
know your cards and every other card that you can remember
then as for your deck, make a good deck but one that fits you
since I think people play better with decks resembling their own traits

finally
know at least one experienced good player and bug the crap out of him
hehe
